Angel caressed his daughter’s hair tenderly. She was so beautiful. Her blonde hair and her soulful green eyes meant the world. She meant everything to him. She was his lover’s daughter. His daughter. Their daughter. Made with all the love of the world on a beautiful rainy afternoon. She was the reason that made that afternoon beautiful. Although he had lost his soul it had been worth it because he had her. His beautiful angel.

She was six years old and full of life. She was all in his life. He lived because of her, to take care of her, to protect her and to guide her through a world full anger and demons. “I love you, sweetheart.” he said, kissing her forehead. He did that ritual every night. He knew she missed her mother. More than that, she needed her. And he… Well, he felt the same.

“I love you too daddy.” She answered back.

He gave her a small smile, got up from her bed and turned off the light. “Good night.” He closed the door and went to the living room. Cordelia was already sitting on the couch waiting for him. “Thank you for looking after her while I’m out, Cordelia”, he said.

She smiled. “No problem.”

He went to the door and left his apartment. Outside was as cold as any other night but he didn’t seem to notice. His mind was elsewhere. With her. He had walked for almost an hour when he finally reached his destination. He entered and went to a room. There she was. His soul mate. As usual she looked incredibly peaceful. All of her life she had done the possible and even the impossible to make the world a better place. To make it safer.

Seeing her lying on that bed killed him. She was the last person in the world who should be there. He approached her bed and took her hand in his. “I’m here Buffy, as usual. I’ll always be here, you know. Always.” he started sobbing. Each night, after putting their daughter to bed he would come and spend the rest of the night with her. He’d stay there all night telling her about his day, or their daughter, or how much he missed her. He knew she couldn’t talk to him but somehow he knew she could hear what he was saying.

It had been six years since the day she had become like that. The doctors had told him there was nothing that could be done to help her and that she would never wake up from her coma. But he didn’t care. He still believed she would wake up and spend the rest of his life with him. He kissed her cheek and forehead. Nobody believed she would ever wake up, except him. He knew deep inside his heart she would wake up someday. Her friends admired the strength of his love for the slayer, but none of them came to the hospital more than twice a month. But he was there every night.

She knew the risks and yet she decided to go forward. She wanted to give him a child. She wanted to have a baby with him. He could remember that night like yesterday. She had come to him happier than ever and had told him the oracles had called her. They had told her wish would come true. She would be a mother. He remembered how happy she was when she told him he would be the father of her child. It was a dream.

The Oracles had used their first night together, well the first and only night they made love (The lost day never happened) and blessed Buffy with a beautiful girl. It was Buffy’s reward to celebrate the end of the war against the evil. And Angel would shanshu on the day their daughter was to be born.

He did shanshu, but that day was far from happy. Weeks before the day the girl was to be born Buffy’s doctor called them. He had seen Buffy’s exams and there was a problem with her organs. They had been seriously damaged by the slaying and according to him Buffy could die or fall into a coma during the birth.

Angel tried to tell Buffy they could have other children when he shanshued but Buffy didn’t care. She wanted her daughter to be born and alive. She was the memory of the most beautiful night of her life. With or without side effects. So she went forward.

Angel looked at his sleeping beauty. “Buffy, I never got the chance to tell you how brave you were. How brave you are. I never understood the reasons why you did what you did. I guess it was the love a mother feels for her daughter. I understand that. I would give my life for her. For you. It’s just… It’s so hard you know… So hard to see you like this and know I can’t do anything to change it. Buffy… Fight it. You’re strong. Come back to me. I love you. I can’t live here without you. You’re the most important part of me…” Angel hardly said his last words aloud to the sleeping angel lying on the bed in front of him. His Buffy.

She had been in that bed for six years. She had lost six years of their daughter’s life. Angel took their daughter to see Buffy once a week. It was hard to see her crying and asking her to wake up. She was too young to understand the truth. Her mother could never wake up again – No! That wasn’t even the point. He could hardly control himself when he saw her face all wet with tears but he had to be strong in front of her.

“I love you Buffy. I’m waiting for you to wake up. Just try it, please. I’ll be here tomorrow.” He got up and kissed her lips softly. Then he moved to the door and left the room and the hospital and went home. He entered the apartment and saw Cordelia asleep on the couch. He went to his daughter’s room. She was sleeping. He loved to be there, admiring her while she slept. She reminded him of Buffy so much. He sat on the chair on the side of her bed and took her hand.

“I went to the hospital as usual, sweetie. She’s still there, I’m always hoping to go there and find her awake… But she will. I feel it. She will someday be back to us, I promise you.” Angel caressed his daughter’s hair tenderly and fell asleep in the chair.

It was a long way road to walk but he was eager to do everything to chance his destiny.

The End
