I Thought She Knew

by Vicky

Summary- Angel hears a song on the radio and it reminds him of the sacrifices he's made... and makes him reconsider them.
Disclaimer- I own none of them. Joss... mutant enemy... and the WB own them. I'm just borrowing them to give them some time off of being MAN-HANDLED! ::grin:: please don't hang me up by my thumbs!
Spoilers- None really...
Author's notes- #1- The song belongs to N* SYNC#2- My Best friend (Kelsey) is in Ireland right now and she left me borrow all of her Buffy tapes. So I'm in a real B/A fluff mood. Seeing as how I just watched Becoming Part one and two ::wipes away a tear::#3- It's short.... sue me

Angel got into his black convertable. He flipped the key in the ignition and drove out into the night. He had no real reason to come out tonight. It just seemed like the office was getting smaller and smaller each passing minute. He had no idea why he had been feeling so isolated in the past couple days.

He had tried to call her but Willow had said she was with that Riley fellow. He really didn't like him. He carried himself like a warrior, but What could he bring to the relationship? She needed someone different.

*Someone like me* his mind told him. He knew it was in there somewhere. The part that still longed for her. To feel her hair, to make her troubles go away. To run to her and tell her that everything will be ok and they can find some way to make it work. The part that thought after all they had been through that they could still find that loophole that she so desperately had wanted.

*Had wanted*

It echoed in his mind. She had moved on. She had found someone to love her like she wanted. To take her into the daylight. To... take her shopping... and... and... get her ice cream on a hot summer day. He could never do that.

*The only chance I had had to do that... thrown away. By breaking that ring I had sacrificed it. But at the time I needed that.*

Angel rounded a corner and stopped at a stop sign. He was so lost in his thoughts that when he actually started moving again... several minutes had passed. Not like anyone cared. It was so quiet and dead out tonight that no one was out.

Angel couldn't stand the silence anymore. He flipped on the radio and listened for a bit.

*Cordelia was in here earlier today. She went to groceries. THAT'S why this... "music" is on*

He wasn't really listening to the words at all. Just enjoying the noise. But when a song came on that was acapella his ears picked up.// She was my once in a lifetime
Happy ending come tru
ohhh I, guess I should have told her
I thought she knew \\

Angel thought about that verse for a moment. It was so true. He thought when he left that Buffy knew how much he would miss her. But when he found out how hard he took it. When he felt how much she longed for him on the forgotten day... He wasn't so sure.

// I thought she knew my world revolved around her
My love light burned for her alone
But she couldn't see the flame
Only myself to blame
I should have known
I should have known \\

This song was hitting home. Why was it that every song he heard reminded him of her? Was it fate? Was this a sign?

// A heart full of words left unspoken
Now that we're through
I'd sell my soul to have this silence broken
oh I thought she knew \\

At that moment Angel realized what he had to do. He flipped off the radio and turned around to the south so fast that it left tires marks on the road. As he drove off into the night he played in his mind the perfect scenario.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Angel sat on her bed. She was still sleeping. He had driven straight here. He had played what he would say over and over. He had everything ready. But when he saw her laying there so peaceful the words escaped him. When she stirred in her sleep she laid a hand on her cheek. He felt once again the softness and gentleness of her. He breathed deeply... smelling her. She opened her eyes and looked around confused. Her eyes finally focused on him and her eyes grew wider. She opened her mouth to say something but he put a finger to her lips to quiet her.

"This is hard for me to say. I love you. I tried leaving to get you off my mind but nothing seems to work. You're always there. I feel you even when you are so far away. You have no idea how hard it is to know up that you gave up your once in a lifetime because you thought it would make everyone feel better. I'm so sorry. But I can't stay away. I know you don't love Riley as much as you love me. how do I know? Because I will never in my whole life love anyone more than I love you."

Buffy's eyes were already full of tears when he wiped them away. She had nothing to say. There was nothing that could be said. He leaned down and kissed her ever so gently. In the kiss Buffy didn't have to say anything. He knew that she agreed.

Because they were caught up in the kiss, they were unable to see the light that poured on his muscular body and her petite but strong frame. The milky light with gold sparks came tendrilling down from the ceiling. It shined brightly on them. It enveloped their bodies in brilliant color. As it grew brighter something exited the small of Angel's back. It was was a black sphere. It had a deep purple light excreting from the middle of it. It was sucked into the ceiling.

As the light grew dim and disapaited, Angel started to glow. First a eerie orange, then a radiant white. He slowed their kiss and finally broke it. When Buffy opened her eyes she was startled.

"Is this a dream?" She asked, glowing softly herself.

"No. The Powers That Be granted me one wish. My wish was you."

"What do you mean?"

"They took my curse, but left my soul."

"You mean..."

"Yes... we can be together."

As they kissed once more, they knew in their hearts this was no dream. And their beings both called out at once-

"Finally!"

The End

I like that ::grin::
